Addressing the Surge in Male Infertility: Challenges and Solutions in Guwahati

“Male infertility is emerging as a significant health issue in Guwahati, reflecting broader trends seen across India. Factors such as changing urban lifestyles, environmental pollution, and rising stress levels are contributing to fertility problems among men. Traditionally a topic associated with stigma, male infertility is now coming into focus as more couples in the city delay parenthood and seek medical intervention to conceive.

Recent studies indicate that male factors are responsible for nearly 40-50% of infertility cases in India, including Guwahati. Common causes such as low sperm count, poor sperm motility, and abnormal sperm shape are often exacerbated by unhealthy habits like smoking, alcohol consumption, poor diet, and exposure to pollutants, which are prevalent in growing urban centers like Guwahati. The increasing pressures of a sedentary lifestyle and work-related stress are also impacting sperm quality.

“Male infertility is no longer an isolated issue,” says Dr Kalpana Jain, a fertility expert from a Birla Fertility & IVF in Guwahati. “We’re seeing a growing number of men seeking fertility treatments, and many times, simple lifestyle changes can lead to noticeable improvements in reproductive health.”

While male infertility has long been considered a taboo topic, initiatives aimed at raising awareness and reducing stigma are gradually making a difference.

Experts stress the need for Guwahati’s men to be more proactive in addressing their reproductive health. “The burden of infertility often falls disproportionately on women, but it’s equally important to focus on men’s health,” adds Dr. Jain. “We need to foster more open dialogue and remove the stigma that prevents men from seeking timely treatment.”

As Guwahati continues to grow and evolve, it’s essential that male infertility is addressed with the same urgency as other reproductive health issues. By promoting early detection and lifestyle changes, we can pave the way for a healthier future for the city’s families.”
